We’re always looking for ways to improve our ability to learn and make decisions, especially in situations with uncertainty. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen and other institutions recently published fascinating findings on how a brief period of mindfulness meditation can facilitate learning.

In their study published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, the researchers had participants engage in either a 5-minute mindfulness breathing exercise or a control task before completing a probabilistic selection task. In this task, participants had to learn which symbols were more likely to be correct across different pairs through repeated trials with feedback.
The remarkable finding was that those who did the mindfulness exercise showed accelerated learning rates specifically following positive prediction errors – in other words, when the feedback indicated their choice was surprisingly correct. Through computational modeling, the researchers unpacked some potential mechanisms behind this effect.
Mindfulness meditation appeared to:
1) Increase the tendency to explore and consider different options rather than just exploit previous rewarding choices. An open, curious mindset facilitates learning.
2) Enhance response caution, requiring more evidence to be accumulated before making a decision. This careful, judicious decision-making style can improve accuracy.
3) Heighten sensitivity to positive prediction errors and using that “better than expected” feedback signal to amplify learning.
The authors speculate that the open monitoring state cultivated by mindfulness likely attunes people to the value of exploring new possibilities. The increased meta-awareness may also underlie the measured, evidence-based response style. Alterations in dopamine signaling could play a role in the heightened impact of positive prediction errors.
While brief, this study provides a compelling demonstration of how even a very short mindfulness exercise can influence fundamental cognitive processes like probabilistic learning and decision-making. By increasing open awareness and response caution, mindfulness may allow us to learn more efficiently from an uncertain environment.
Of course, more research is needed on different mindfulness practices, dosages, and types of learning tasks. But these findings add to the evidence that mindfulness training can be a powerful way to optimize cognitive function. Incorporating moments of mindful breathing could be a simple yet effective technique to prime the brain for accelerated learning.
The key takeaway is that you don’t need to be an expert meditator to capitalize on mindfulness for cognitive benefits.
